Differences Between Insurance and Auto Insurance

Powerlineer — Professional electrical panel and protection systems solutions in Sakarya Serdivan

One of the most important safety elements in electrical installations is fuses. However, the terms “insurance” and “auto insurance” are often confused. As Powerlineer, we explain the differences between these two systems in a simple way.

⚡ 1. Classic Fuse (Plug / Wire Fuse)

Old type fuses contain a fusible wire (flux) inside. When the current limit is exceeded, the wire melts and breaks the circuit. However, once it melts, it cannot be reused and must be replaced with a new one.

  • Requires manual change.
  • Visual indication of fault (wire broken).
  • In modern systems, it has been replaced by automatic fuses.

🧰 2. Automatic Insurance (MCB)

Automatic fuses break the circuit with a magnetic or thermal mechanism when the current exceeds the limit. The wire does not melt, it just opens the circuit. When the fault is resolved, it can be put into operation by lifting the arm again.

  • Reusable (no refurbishment required).
  • Provides faster response time.
  • Offers high sensitivity and security.

MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) types are generally produced in classes such as 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 32A.

🔍 3. Working Difference

Feature Classic Insurance Auto Insurance
Working Principle The wire melts by heating Thermal or magnetic mechanism
Usage Life Disposable Can be used over and over again
Security Level Low High
Maintenance Requirement Needs renewal Only testing is sufficient

💡 4. Which one should be used in which situation?

  • In residences and offices: Automatic insurance should be preferred.
  • In old installations: It should be modernized and switched to the RCD/MCB system.
  • In industrial facilities: Type C or D type automatic fuses should be used.

🧯 5. Additional Precautions for Safety

  • Must be used together with a residual current relay (RCD).
  • Connections within the panel must be tight (looseness causes heating).
  • Fuse amperage value should be selected in accordance with the circuit load.
